Non-Fiction Books to Check Out!

Let's diversify your non-fiction reads! Here are some non-fiction books that I highly recommend to start with!

Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari

This is an informative book that takes us from the beginning of humanity. Reading this felt like a journey from the past. Except, this is not your typical past. The past here extends during humanity's primal years. A time before Homo Sapiens dominated the world and a time when different species of Homo exist such as the Neanderthals, Homo Erectus and all other species whose DNA did not thrive to still exist today. This book takes us in a long journey that details how Homo sapiens became the dominant specie in the world.

“The romantic contrast between modern industry that “destroys nature” and our ancestors who “lived in harmony with nature” is groundless. Long before the Industrial Revolution, Homo sapiens held the record among all organisms for driving the most plant and animal species to their extinctions. We have the dubious distinction of being the deadliest species in the annals of life.” - Yuval Noah Harari

When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi

What makes life worth living in the face of death? What do you do when the future, no longer ladder toward your goals in life?

This is a heartfelt memoir of a Neurosurgeon who was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer just a year before he completes his residency. This is a heart wrenching read that detail just how much a person’s life can change in an instant, to face a new life devoid of all he ever knew as the future he planned for himself evaporates before his eyes, how sickness can slowly change a person and his loved ones.

“I began to realize that coming in such close contact with my own mortality had changed both nothing and everything. Before my cancer was diagnosed, I knew that someday I would die, but I didn’t know when. After the diagnosis, I knew that someday I would die, but I didn’t know when. But now I knew it acutely. The problem wasn’t really a scientific one. The fact of death is unsettling. Yet there is no other way to live.” -  Paul Kalanithi

How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie

I loved how this book teaches us to make the most out of every situation most especially in undesirable circumstances when we have to deal with people. More importantly, this book teaches us how to be compassionate to others and create a meaningful connection with the people around us whether they are business associates or our loved ones.

“Everybody in the world is seeking happiness—and there is one sure way to find it. That is by controlling your thoughts. Happiness doesn't depend on outward conditions. It depends on inner conditions.” - Dale Carnegie
